Cebu City is regarded as the oldest city in the Philippines and where the first Spanish settlement took place. The city is rich in historical places attraction that are being preserved and served as the monument of the city’s turbulent past.
Fort San Pedro situated in Cebu City’s pier area is one of the city’s historical places. It is considered as the oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines. Way back before, the fort first serve as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines lead by Lopez de Legazpi. It acts as a repel sieges by hostile natives and Muslim pirates. It as named after Legaspi’s flagship “ San Pedro”. Later, the fort became prison for local rebels during the Philippine revolution from 1896 to 1898. It was then turned over to Cebuanos by Commodore George Dewey and at one time became the American Warwick Barracks during the American Regime. After that, it was turned into classrooms where Cebuanos first received formal education in 1937 to 1941. And during World War II, used as prison camp and fortification for Japanese soldiers as well as served as hospital when battle for liberation was fought and became army camp from 1946 to 1950.

Fort San Pedro now is a museum-park filled with Spanish artifacts, document, paintings sculptures, cannons and a whole lot more about its history. While on the area one can imagine how this place survived through the years. It depicts the disruptive past of the forth in particular and the City of Cebu in general.

Visitors would pay a minimal fee of Php 10 to enter the tourist landmark. Getting to Fort San Pedro is not that difficult since there are always cabs that you can take or a jeepney with Pier2 of Plaza Independencia signboards.
