How to Access Cebu City
October 5th, 2009 by Mark MarangaCebu City is very accessible anywhere you are in the country or even if you’re abroad. You can either reach Cebu by plane or by boat.
By plane, you can get to Cebu City through the Mactan-Cebu International Airport located in Lapu-Lapu which is a 20 t0 30 minute ride to Cebu City. It has numerous daily flights to and from Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong and as well as scheduled flights to Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Qatar, and China. Also the airport has catered seasonal travel to Russia, China, United States and other nation. The airport also has domestic flights to anywhere in the country. Since the airport is in Lapu-Lapu, you need to ride on a taxi to be able to reach the city. But if you are staying to one of the respected hotels in the city, they normally have free van that would pick you up at the airport. There are also other amenities on the airport such as banking and communication facilities, food shops, hotel and resort reservation, and souvenir shops. Among the cheapest airlines to travel on are Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airline Express, SEAir and Asian Spirit.
By boat, you can get to the city from almost anywhere you are in the country. The Cebu City’s domestic port is the busiest which is a home to 80% of the country’s passenger vessels. Here you can find the Philippines largest shipping company headquartered in Cebu like WG&A, Sulpicio and others. Large passenger vessels with the capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 passengers reached to more distant routes such as Manila, Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro. Medium-sized ferries ply to a nearer destinations and fast ferries channels passengers to and from conterminous islands with 2 hours or less travel depending on the destination.
If you’re already in Cebu and you want to get around and discover the city, you can ride a taxi, jeepneys or buses. The simplest way would be to ride a taxi which cost 60 to 70 pesos depending on where you want to go. The taxi’s current flag down is 30 pesos and would cost 2.50 pesos per succeeding 200 meters and 2.50 pesos as well per waiting time per two minutes. However, sometimes driver will try to bargain if they notice that you are a tourist which will cost you twice the real price. But you have an option not go to with the deal and report the driver to the authorities. Most of the drivers as well do not have or will say they don’t have change, so be ready for your 10’s, 20’s or 50’s before going on a short trip. It would also be nice to give a little amount to drivers especially if they are nice to you.
But if you want adventure especially if it’s your first time or you don’t have friends in town is to ride the jeepney. Simply ask the driver or ask the people around what route to take to be able to reach your desired destination. Most of the jeepneys are 24 hours and covers all of the corners because it is the main means of transportation in the city. There are also buses that are available but they tend to run exclusively along the north to south route.
