The Colon Street is the oldest street in the Philippines. In Cebuano it is known as Dalang Colon while in Tagalog it is known as Daang Colon. It is also known as Parian. It was developed by the Spanish who arrived in Cebu in 1565 headed by Conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi with their ships San Pedro, San Pablo and San Juan.

Meters away from the Colon Street are the Cebu Heritage Marker, Yap-San Diego Ancestral House and Casa Gorordo Museum. On the other side, about a 5-minute walk are the old churches of Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral and Basilica del Sto. Nino where the Magellan’s cross is hailed.

The modern Colon Street no longer has the most old, historic buildings that give someone the glimpse of his past. Someone should be blamed for not preserving this very historical place where Filipinos and Spaniards alike spent most of their time.

Colon Street

Banks, Malls, Stalls, Restaurants and a lot of modern establishments inhabited the place and congestion can be very much noticed when visiting the place. There are several old buildings though, but I don’t know if the government still have the guts to preserve those old edifices.

The Casa Gorordo Museum before it was built to a depository for collecting and displaying objects having scientific or historical or artistic value was a simple house built by Alejandro Reynes Y Rosales in the 19th. It was bought by a Spanish merchant in 1863 by the name of Juan Isidro de Gorordo, thus the name Casa Gorordo. Four generations of the Gorordo family dwell in this house including the first Filipino bishop of Cebu, Juan Gorordo, in 1910-1932.

Casa Gorordo

The house was acquired by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc (RAFI) in 1980. It was refurnished and later made as a public museum. The Casa Gorordo has been declared a National Historical Landmark in 1991 by the NHI.

It is located a stone-throw away from the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House. It is open during weekdays on regular office hours. Children and adults alike enjoy the old stuffs that can be found inside the museum as well as stay in the 2nd floor and take a glimpse of how the rich lives in the past.

Lapu-Lapu Monument depicts the hero himself Lapu-Lapu holding a shield in one hand and kampilan sword on the other hand. It’s a 20-meter bronze statue inside Mactan Shrine in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines. It is built in front of Magellan Marker and in honor of Datu Lapu-Lapu who was a native chieftain of the island who defeated the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan along with his soldiers in the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521. Lapu-Lapu then became the first Filipino hero.

Lapu-Lapu Monument

Lapu-Lapu Monument reminds bravery among Filipinos. It depicts the history of the country specifically of the island of Mactan which is one of Cebu’s historical places and attraction. Nevertheless Mactan Shrine is also a nice place to visit especially in the afternoon where you can have a beautiful view of the sunset. The grounds are very well kept and the place is well preserved. Marvel at the exquisite designs made purely from shells in the small stalls outside the shrine. You could also have great seafood meals in one of the fish restaurants nearby.

Lapu-Lapu Monument: a historical site, good for contemplating Philippine history.

Fort San Pedro situated in Cebu City’s pier area is one of the city’s historical places. It is considered as the oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines. Way back before, the fort first serve as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines lead by Lopez de Legazpi. It acts as a repel sieges by hostile natives and Muslim pirates. It as named after Legaspi’s flagship “ San Pedro”. Later, the fort became prison for local rebels during the Philippine revolution from 1896 to 1898. It was then turned over to Cebuanos by Commodore George Dewey and at one time became the American Warwick Barracks during the American Regime. After that, it was turned into classrooms where Cebuanos first received formal education in 1937 to 1941. Cannon at the Fort

Fort San Pedro now is a museum-park filled with Spanish artifacts, document, paintings sculptures, cannons and a whole lot more about its history. While on the area one can imagine how this place survived through the years. It depicts the disruptive past of the forth in particular and the City of Cebu in general.

Fort San Pedro Artifacts

Visitors would pay a minimal fee of Php 10 to enter the tourist landmark. Getting to Fort San Pedro is not that difficult since there are always cabs that you can take or a jeepney with Pier2 of Plaza Independencia signboards.
